Kennel Club offers toning tips

The Kennel Club has been handing out its top toning tips and suggests that buying a dog is the perfect way to get exercising.

It runs a programme called 'Get Fit with Fido', which aims to promote the various ways that dogs and their owners can exercise together.

As well as taking your pet for a walk, there are a number of other doggy disciplines in which you can both work up a sweat, including dog agility and working trials.

However, Caroline Kisko, the Kennel Club's secretary, said that it is important to select the breed of dog carefully to match your needs, otherwise you could find yourself unable to keep up.

"A French Bulldog for example requires around 30 minutes of exercise a day, but other dogs such as the Springer Spaniel or Labrador Retriever will benefit from more than two hours of exercise a day," she said.

The University of Bristol recently revealed that pregnant women are more likely to get the recommended amount of exercise if they own a dog.
