Eating disorders

Some eating patterns can be damaging to your health. Eating disorders are a serious issue affecting 1.6 million people in the UK. You may believe that you need to lose weight when it is not in the best interest of your health. If you have a low body weight then gaining good weight by toning without gaining fat will make you look much better. The body mass index (BMI) is the key tool to check if your weight is too low for your height:

BMI (kg/m2) = your weight in Kg ÷ your height in meters ÷ your height in meters.
eg. if you weigh 50kg and are 1.6 meters tall then your BMI is 50÷1.6÷1.6 = 19.5

The normal weight range is a BMI between 18.5 and 25. If your BMI is below 18.5 you will do harm by losing more weight. If your BMI is below 18.5 and your periods have stopped then your low weight may well already be disturbing your normal hormone balance. This has long-term implications for your heart and bone health and you should talk with your doctor about the situation.
